Part 4 Summary

Key moments:

-Case is arrested by the police.

-Wintermute kills the police and Case is freed.

-Wintermute can only use digital locks so he needs somebody physically unlock the turning locks that keep itself and Neuromancer separated. He tells Molly to get close with his creator 3jane so that she can acquire the key.

-It is reviled that Armitage is delusional and thinks that he is actually Willis Corto. (His old self during and before the Screaming Fist mission. He also thinks that Wintermute is his Captain and follows his orders.

Armitage soon after gets sucked into space and presumably dies.

-While being trapped inside one of Peter Riviera’s holograms, Molly is kidnapped by a ninja named Hideo (She breaks her leg in the process).

-Wintermute tells Case to kill Peter Riviera.

-Case is unconscious and finds himself on a beach with a past lover named Linda Lee.

-Linda admits that she is a Random-Access-Memory Construct which means that Case he could stay with the love of his life however she would be a human.

-However Case becomes conscious when he starts to hear Zion Dub music in the background and walks away.

In the end of the novel Wintermute and Neuromancer end up merging; Molly leaves; Wintermute gets the enzymes to cure the toxic sacs in Cases system. Case gets a blood change as well. The Dixie Flatline gets his wish and gets erased. Wintermute ends up becoming the matrix, which is another world for cyberspace. Case is in a much better position mentally and financially after their adventures.

Part 3 Summary

The setting switches from Istanbul to Freeside, which is an orbital city (see image). While there Case befriends Maelcum, a Rastafarian local with a stereotypical Rastafarian personality. Maelcum joins Case, Molly, Armitage, Peter Riviera and Dixie on their quest to get more information about the Tessier-Ashpools and the Artificial Intelligences they created. Early on in part three the theme of what makes us human is questioned by the Dixie Flatline because he is a Read-Only-Memory construct. Soon after the reader discovers that the AI named Wintermute wants to merge with his sibling AI Neuromancer to form a Super Al. 
Note: The two AIs names are Wintermute and Neuromancer. Wintermute wants to merge with Neuromancer because Neuromancer has the ability to copy minds which Wintermute does not. Long story short Wintermute wants to merge with Neuromancer to gain power.

Part 2 Summary

Case then finds out from Armitage that his new pancreas has toxic sacs that are slowly dissolving and the only was Artmitage will give the antidote to him is if he follows his orders. They then embark on a mission where Case is in cyberspace hacking the system of a big cooperation called Sense/Net, and helping to allow Molly to find a personality matrix called the Dixie Flatline. Finn is the man who helps the two communicate. The Dixie Flatline tells Case that Armitage was  Colonel Willis Corto before he became Armitage. He broke through Russian defines in  Kiev. His mission was to inject a virus named mole 1x (first true virus), however the Russians were waiting, he barely made it out alive, he was blind and legless, when he came back from his mission he got rebuilt then he vanished for 10 years and turned up again as Armitage. After that Case receives a message from Finn from an anonymous messenger saying Wintermute. It turns out that Armitage's financial backer is an Artificial Intelligence name Wintermute.  Wintermute was made by the Tessier Ashpool family who is rich and lives in lives in an orbit in space. To end the second part they go to Istanbul to secretly get information from Peter Riviera. Peter Riviera's talent is that he has one way telepathy so he can out images into other people head without consequence. This is a talent that Armitage wants.

Advancements in Technology

Artificial intelligence. We don't have the technology yet...
Only time will tell if we ever will.  

When it comes to advancements in technology how far is too far? Where do we draw the line? Don't get me wrong technology is a wonderful thing but there becomes a point in time when it becomes detrimental rather than its initial purpose of being beneficial. We are seeing that right now from up close and afar. Jobs that once provided Ontario families with a steady reliable source of income are being disassembled and sailed across the world so that corporate owners can have an even bigger pay check.Technology is also a big factor behind the increasing rate of obesity in children and adults. Yes having HD graphics on a 50 inch plasma tv playing a video game based on your favourite sport is cool fun. However you are not outside burning calories buy moving a joystick or shaking a controller up and down. Which is making us lazier and less motivated as a society. In Neuromacer technology is more advanced than this planet will know for centuries. Example include: artificial intelligences, recording brain patterns of dead people, living in space and prosthetics. I won't get into artificial intelligences and the recording of brain patterns. It seems as though everyone has is.  Wage has eyes with sea green nikon transplants, Ratz has his prosthesis arm, Molly has mirrors set into her head protecting her eyes and retractable blades for fingers. Case joins the club with the addition of his new pancreas that. A pancreas that makes the effects of drugs minuscule. In all these cases excluding Cases the prosthetic procedures were unnecessary other than for personal gain (being strong, picture taking eyes, being better equipped for battle etc.). William Gibson is putting on paper a world that technology has advanced to a point were artificial intelligences or AI for short have advanced to the point where the police have to monitor them to insure that they do not surpass a certain level of intelligence and ultimately out smart the humans like we've seen in countless movies. To sum everything up technology is great however we need to monitor its progression and make decisions that are best for us as humans.

We use prosthetics as a 'cure' for the needy.

Character List

Case 

Case is the main character in the novel and described himself as a  thief that worked for wealthier thieves. His nervous system became messed up when toxins were put into his body for stealing from his employers. The toxin disabled his ability to surf cyberspace and hack on the matrix. This caused Case to disengage and become suicidal. This changes when he is gifted a new pancreas from Armitage. Case then gets exited about rekindling  his lost love of cyber hacking. Case is also an honest man; an example of this is when he went back to repay his tab that he owed Ratz.

Wage 

Wage is a rich thief that has people working for him. Case used to work for him until he sold Case's contract to Armitage. Wage has eyes with sea green nikon transplants and platinum bracelet. The bracelets symbolize being successful. Wage is very much a business man.

Ratz

Ratz is a bartender at Chatsubo. He has a Russian military prosthesis arm that has the power to squeeze steel he has a very dry sense of humour. You might say that his surroundings compliment his appearance very well (run down, grimy).

Molly

Molly is a very attractive mid age woman who refers to herself as a working girl. She has mirrored glasses which are actually mirrors set into her head protecting her eyes so you don't know what she's thinking and very weird looking nails. Her nails are actually retractable blade that are as sharp as a butcher's knife. Molly is Case's partner in crime thinks that case is just a man that is down on his luck. She may come across as an innocent young lady but she doesn't hesitate to get into physical altercations with anyone.

Armitage

Armitage is a sketchy, wealthy business man who bought Case's contract. Armitage used to be Colonel Willis Corto. On a mission he was to inject a virus named mole 1x (first true virus) into a Russian system, however the Russians were waiting, he barely made it out alive, he lost his legs and vision, he got rebuilt apon his return and vanished for 10 years. The rebuilder was an artificial intelligence named Wintermute. He is very dependent on the AI.

Wintermute

Wintermute is an artificial intelligence made by the Tessier Ashpool family.

Finn

Finn is and old friend of Molly. He is the communications technician during Case and Molly's missions. 

Dixie Flatline

The Dixie flatline used to be an old companion of Case. He died 3 times throughout his life. After his final death his brain pattern were recorded by Sense/Net. Case works with the recording of his brain to find dirt on Armitage.   

Part 1 Summary

The book start of in bar called Chatsubo, owned by a Mr. Ratz. Ratz is has a typical bartender personality and a prosthetic arm. The main character Case's employer Wage (who has green nikon transplants) informs Case that he sold his contract to a man named Armitage essentially ending their relationship. Case is a man who is "down on his luck" and lacks the motivation to live, he has been this way since a toxin was placed in his nervous system enabling his cherished ability to enter cyber space/ the matrix and hack. A woman named Molly (who has mirrored glasses actually mirrors set into her head and 10 retractable blades for nails similar to the comic book hero wolverine) who already works for Armitage takes Case to Armitage. There they talk about the Screaming Fist which was war mission. On that mission they tried to destroy a computer system called Nexus. Case was the one who invented the first virus called the Mole. It was said that only one person made it back. Armitage wants Case to work for him and in return he offers to give him a new top of the line panaceas (his old one would have cause his death within a year). The surgery is very painful. He spends 8 days recovering before is enters cyberspace. They leave Japan and go the Atlanta where Case feels at home.

Setting

• In the novel the setting is especially important because at the time of the release of Neuromacer Japan was seen as a prosperous , futuristic country that were highly advanced in the field of technology. This is a trend found in Sci-fi novels throughout the ages with the most recent example being anime. Chiba City is the name of the city that host the most action in the early stages of the book. If you are not familiar  with novels written by William Gibson, then you are not familiar with his unique ways of expressing his characters and settings (The traditional way being in a sunny feel good environment). Gibson puts his characters in somewhat grungy surrounding. A few examples of that are: first the main character Case likes to hang out at a bar owned by a bartender named Ratz. To sum up the cleanliness of the bar look no further than the owner's name. A second example is instead of the main character living and sleeping in a nice home Case is sleeping in a place called the Cheap Hotel which is essentially a coffin. Another important factor about the setting is the mood,which has great similarities to the physical setting. Case does not have a good state of mind and some may say he is suicidal.
