The novel that I have chosen for my ISU is Neuromancer written by William Gibson. It was published in 1984 by ACE Books. Ace is primarily publishes science fiction books. The book has a handful of different covers (most are paper back) and consists of approximately 270 pages.
I have not read all that much of the book seeing as I have just got it however I can see character development slowly blossoming. I did a lot of research and I know that I will like it. One thing that stands out to me of why I like the book so much is the cover. Looking at it a lot of questions come to mind. Questions that are really intriguing and will make you want to read the book.
As previously stated I have not read much, not quite the first chapter but I am really excited to continue reading. There is a lot of great imagery and the charters are relate-able because they seem down to earth.
This quote on the first page greatly defines the setting/ mood of the book, “The sky above the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel”. This dramatic symbolism deeply demonstrates the way that the main character Case sees the world. Case is a washed up computer hacker that is lacking self esteem and has found himself addicted to drugs. Nothing is going well for him. As for the plot, looking far ahead I can get a sense that he is going to pick himself up and get back to what he once loved (hacking).
Passion is the theme that I believe the author is trying to portray, the main character Case at one point in time a very happy young man who woke up every morning excited because he loved lost his ability to hack and has became addicted to drugs and is suicidal.
Rowan, Iain. "William Gibson: Neuromancer - an Infinity plus Review." Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror from Infinity plus. 24 Nov. 2001. Web. 16 Sept. 2011. <http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/neuromancer.htm>.
Mr. Rowan gave a detailed review about the book gave a quick summary about the characters/plot and made light upon a couple themes that he saw in the novel. He also went on to say about how the book has opened up a whole new audience which has consequently attracted more authors to write books with a similar story line. Not to mention the videogame about the book was groundbreaking too.
“’It's not like I'm using”, (Neuromancer 3). This quote is significant to me as it should be to anyone. The quote is referring to a man who obviously was a drug problem but is in denial. The word in his sentence is not necessarily what speaks to me, what does is the way the he is saying it. You can hear a
man trying to convince another that everything is fine when it is not.
The time line for me finishing the book is not exact however I do want to try to get 100 pages a week which would take me 3 weeks to do. Most of that time will take place during D.E.A.R.
